Parks and Recreation recognizes NERD CULTURE

Nerd culture is on the rise, even the writers over at NBC's Parks and Recreation seem to think so.  Yesterday's episode (10/6/2011) entitled "Born and Raised" included a brief discussion between two of the show's main characters Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari) and Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) discussing the most effective way to blow off a particularly aggressive, drunk and newly single female lunch companion.  Tom suggests that Ben bore her with "nerd stuff" to which Ben defends nerds by pointing out that nerd culture is becoming more "mainstream" now.

Just remember when everyone starts sporting taped up glasses and suspenders this fall that Nerdsburgh was here first...VIVA LA NERD REVOLUTION!

Parks and Recreation tipping their hats to the Nerd Revolution:

TOM: You've gotta throw some cold water on this situation.  Start talkin' about nerd stuff.

BEN: You know, nerd culture is mainstream now.  So when you use the word "nerd" derogatorily means you're the one that's out of the zeitgeist.

TOM: Yes, that's perfect.  Just like that.  Be incredibly boring.
Tom and Ben's conversation can be viewed at the 11:15 minute mark of the episode "Born and Raised," but I highly recommend not skipping ahead but instead, watching the entire video.  Parks and Rec, as the program's regular viewers refer to it as, is much like the small town of Pawnee that the show takes place in.  It's an underdog comedy in a powerhouse line-up of NBC veteren shows airing this fall.  Sarcastic and awkward like "The Office" with the nice guy sincerity of "Newhart," Parks and Rec is worth a second glance...chances are you're already watching NBC on Thursdays anyway, why not stick around for a while?
